James joined the Northern Territory (NT) Police Force (NTPF) in March 2005 and performed frontline duties throughout the NT. From 2012 – 2021 James served in the NTPFs Police Tactical Group the Territory Response Group (TRG), successfully representing the NT locally and nationally as a tactical operator, tactical team leader and then tactical commander. During this time James was promoted to Senior Sergeant at the beginning of 2017 and took over as Officer in Charge – TRG.
James was then promoted to Superintendent in April, 2021 and served as a Territory Duty Superintendent with duty officer oversight of Territory-wide operations, before being transferred to Alice Springs at the end of 2022 as the Superintendent of Crime Prevention and Engagement Division. James has been the Acting Commander for Southern Command, incorporating Central Australia and Barkly regions, since April 2023 in a relief capacity.
James has completed the Australian Institute of Police Management’s Graduate Certificate in Applied Management and a Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Management through Charles Sturt Uni.
